Artist Statement

Discovery is an essential element of my process throughout the creation of my mixed-media paintings. I often begin by building multiple layers of collage elements on the surface, followed by layers of acrylic paint, drawn lines, circles, patterns, and other marks. Through this process of building, constructing, and deconstructing, the painting begins to develop its own internal language and narrative that continually calls me back to the work.

I adjust, experiment, obscure, uncover, and shift the relationships between elements as the painting evolves. I rarely know where a piece is headed when I begin. Instead, I trust the process and allow the work to reveal possibilities I could not have anticipated. Painting becomes a way of discovering places that feel both familiar and unknown. Often, the work takes me somewhere I did not anticipate.

My current work is circling the idea of holding, of things gathered, contained, and sheltered within their own keeping. Lines move through and around forms, inviting curiosity rather than directing the eye. Elements gather, separate, overlap, and recede, creating a sense of movement and stillness within the work.
